My Memories with Tun Dr. Mahathir

4 09 2007

Papa said that Tun Dr. Mahathir will be doing a heart surgery tomorrow, done by Tan Sri Dr. Yahya Awang. He is 82 years old and he might be the first 82-year-old Malaysian doing this risky operation.

I remembered the first time I met him was when he had a Hari Raya open house. I was quite small, 4 years old. I brought my IKEA-toy kangaroo, “Kangaroo”, along but I myself don’t know why. He talked to me and put the duit raya inside Kangaroo’s pocket in the front.

Another time was when it was his grandson, Misha Hakeem’s birthday party. It was a costume party. I was dressed as the Blossom, the leader of the Powepuff Girls.
Then, it was when I collected money for the Pakistani Earthquake victims. I had a collection box made from a tissue box and I explained to him because he asked what the ‘box’ is all about. He immediately took out his wallet and put RM30.00 inside the tissue box I was holding. Actually Papa earlier handed a check to Dato’ Mukhriz for the amount of RM 845.00 (the amount of cash collected through the ’tissue box’) to be given to Peace Malaysia for the Pakistani disaster. Because Tun Dr. Mahathir put in money, the collection box ‘moved on’ and managed to collect few more hundred Ringgit that night alone.

The last I met him was at Dato’ Mukhriz’s Hari Raya open house, last year. We took a picture with him and afterwards, Papa discussed with him on something I don’t understand. Papa also said later that night, he had a heart attack and was hospitalised.

Papa said he was the Prime Minister of Malaysia for a long time, much earlier before I was born. When he retired, I was still in standard one and I don’t know anything. Now that I am older, my parents explained to me things and events that I missed. I read a lot about him in my Lat collection and its funny. What I can remember about him was he is very friendly to me, even though I am a small child.

Very nice that you have oppotunity to rub shoulder with Tun, Iban kids like me from Kapit Sarawak do not have such oppotunity. I heard Tun was a great Bapa modernization for Malaysia which I think many people are happy.

Dear Aishah,

Indeed Tun Dr. Mahathir a charismatic leader and a grate statesman. You are very lucky to have met him in person at such young age and have the courage to speak to him. I’ve seen a 29 year old that claimed he will take a bullet for Tun but don’t have the guts to talk to him. In the end we do all the talking and that poor fella do all the nodding… 😀

yes aishah, you are just so lucky to have met ‘The Great Man’. how i envy you. it is my life-long dream to meet him and to shake his hand. hopefully soon, insyaAllah.

Dr M is modern Malaysia’s hero. but to most, he is just simply our ‘Father’. remember him, Aishah. he has contributed enormously for Malaysia to be where it is today.
